This is not a rant, but coming straight outta concern & care for those who are badly in need of jobs. Every small gesture, effort, word, sentence, mail, or message you put in with the hope of landing a good job matters a lot. It’s worth your time to research more about how to navigate your job-hunting journey more efficiently.
Here are a few things that you should all know while you reach out to HR friends/folks (or any other employees in the org) for references or job openings in the company:
- Please do a basic research about the company before generically asking, “is there any opening in your company!?” or “can you refer me to any job openings?”, etc.
2. Check the careers page of the company or the LinkedIn page of the company and see if there are open roles relevant to your experience.
3. If you find a role open which matches your experience, share that job link with HR folks (or anybody from whom you want to get referred), asking if they could refer you to that particular position.
4. Additionally, drop a line or two telling them why you think you are the right candidate or a right fit (too much effort!?). Even better, if you share any examples of your boast-worthy work!
5. Ask for the referrer’s email ID so that you can send your profile with a note. Please note that HRs get many messages in their LinkedIn inbox and can easily ignore or forget with the zillion other things they are doing.
6. Politely follow up. Avoid asking, “any update?”, “can you reply!?” sort of messages.
7. And remember, not all HRs are into hiring, nor they’d be aware of every single role open in the organization. HR is a vast domain which constitutes many roles, of which one role which directly deals with hiring is a recruiter or a talent acquisition role.
Too much of an effort!? As they say, searching for a job is a full-time job. And, you dont want to mess it up.
Hope you land on your #DreamJob!
